What to expect at class
- When you arrive, please tell me if you have any injuries, difficulties or if you are pregnant or recently have given birth. This is in your own interest so that I can help you take care of yourself.
- We usually dance in bare feet or in soft dance shoes - preferably not trainers unless you have foot problems.
- Wear something comfy - leggings and a top - but not too baggy because that means I can't see your movements properly. If you want to dress up , sequins and sparkles are always very welcome.
- Bring a drink of water in case you need it.
- If you would like to tie something around your hips - like a scarf - you might find it increases your awareness of your hip movements. If you'd like to buy a jingly or beady belt, I recommend the top-notch service from Farida Dance, or Aladdin's Cave.
- We start with a gentle warm-up, followed by some drills to get your muscles activated, and a simple class boogie. During the class we work on some of the following: choregraphy, technique, interpreting the music and learning about Egyptian music styles & rhythms. Often we may be preparing for a performance. We finish with a cool-down stretch.
- I want you to enjoy the class and have fun, so please give me any feedback or questions. If you're feeling a bit shy, get in touch on Facebook or email (top right of this page)
- It isn't an exercise class, it's a dance class. Some weeks you'll feel the burn, other weeks you'll feel the emotion. You won't always go home sweaty (especially in winter)
- Dance is all about the music. I teach to a range of styles of bellydance music, mainly modern Egyptian pop, and bellydance arrangements of traditional Egyptian songs. It can take a while to get into the music - it took me a long time to learn to love it, but it's worth it.
- I can't take pay-as-you-go students. We build on our learning week-on-week, especially as beginners - and I have to be there whether you turn up or not!. If paying for the whole term up front is really a problem for you, please talk to me - we may be able to work something out.
- The single most important thing you can bring to class is your joy. Dance is fun - let's have fun together!
